Seattle Loves Mountains (Not King Coal or His Dirty Bankers at Chase)

Activists Put Chase Under Siege in Seattle

This weekend, Seattle activists tired of watching big banks ruin the global economy and the planet had an action at a Chase branch in Seattle.

Chase is currently the biggest U.S. funder of mountaintop removal.

Here’s a reportback from activist Duff Badgley:

CHASE BANK UNDER SIEGE—THE FIGHT CONTINUES

We’ve joined the Rainforest Action Network national campaign against arch climate criminal Chase Bank’s funding of mountaintop removal.

And, to celebrate, we held a Seattle branch of Chase under siege yesterday, February 13. Squad car lights flashed as cops, security guards and multiple bank managers defended the right of Chase to ruin our planet.

We protesters returned to the scene of the N30 crime where I was arrested after chaining myself to the front door of Chase at Westlake Plaza. I’m under court order to not enter this Chase branch until after July 6, 2010.

We badly scared Chase on N30. A Chase rep at their corporate headquarters in New York City said Seattle protesters had “defaced” a branch of Chase and were facing “federal charges”. They’ve gotta be scared of us if they distort the truth so badly. My co-arrestee and I were completely nonviolent on N30 and were each charged only with violating local trespass law.

So, we went back yesterday to keep the siege of Chase Bank going.

It’s important to remember who is the criminal here.

The criminal on N30 was Chase Bank for a laundry list of climate crimes including heavily financing coal, oil and gas industries. The criminal now is still Chase Bank for being the largest financier of mountaintop removal.

MTR is the practice of blowing off the tops of mountains in Appalachia to extract coal. MTR literally reduces whole mountains—472 so far—to rubble as it detonates the explosive equivalent of one Hiroshima atom bomb each week in the country’s oldest mountains. MTR poisons waterways across thousands of square miles. MTR releases toxic dust across the same range. MTR violently destroys forest and wildlife habitat, turning lush woodland into mangled moonscapes of bare rock.

All this criminal behavior is funded by Chase more than any other bank. All this criminal behavior comes to extract coal, our dirtiest fossil fuel and our worst aggravator of climate change.

The cops and security guards and bank managers behaved yesterday as if reading from our script. The managers recognized us on the sidewalk outside Chase from N30. They promptly summoned security and police. Two police cruisers plus bicycle cops responded. The cops stationed themselves outside the bank on the sidewalk, while bank employees stared at us from inside. One cop placed himself between us and the bank front door. Chase customers had to walk a gauntlet past the flashing lights, the cops and our big CHASE BANK CLIMATE CRIMINALS banner to get into the bank.

Kristen, one of our protesters, entered the bank to withdraw all her money and close her account—a hugely powerful act. She reported back the bank employees inside “were all scared”. Chase was under siege!!

RAN has fellow protesters against Chase in the streets of Chicago and New York. In Seattle, we plan regular protests at this Chase branch or others in our city—until they stop their climate crimes.

Join us! Tell friends who bank at Chase to withdraw their money. Let’s spark a national boycott of Chase. Make Chase Bank stop hurting Our Shared Planet.

My Hometown Love Mountains

Nice Scott - nice!

Misinformed

I really feel sorry for all you misinformed, holier than thou elitists, who put inanimate objects above your fellow man. We are in a crisis like none we have ever seen in you or your parent’s life time. Illegal immigration threatens to undermine our great nation, Islamic extremists want to kill you and your family, the economy is failing, Washington is hell bent on shoving Health care down our throats, and all you can do is protest against coal?? WAKE UP!! You have a real chance to make a difference here but not when you act out against the American worker and their families. Green jobs are a pipe dream perpetrated by those who would lead you to believe that we can take the folks out of the mines and put them behind a computer screen. I am sorry; most of us have had to go to work right out of High School to support ourselves. Unlike you we did not have Mommy and Daddy financing our degenerate behavior while we were being brain washed by college professors who were draft dodgers and dope smokers who could not actually make it in the free market so they turn their impotence on you and your impressionable feeble minds and convince you they are Gods and you are their disciples. I guarantee you that COAL will be here long after you are dead and gone. You really want to help, then let’s work together to find ways to clean it up. That would mean that you would have to accept that we are not the enemy and you are not the saviors of the planet and this is, I am afraid something you can’t do. It isn’t as glamorous, radical or revolutionary for you and gains little publicity. Go to West Virginia and shake hands with the fine men and women who make an honest living, work hard and try to make America a better place. Now you will make fun of my use of the written word, and the fact that I am the problem and not the solution. I am a Coal Miner therefore I surely must be the enemy! You will never get it, but I just wanted to sound off while I was still a free man. God Bless America and God Bless our Troops.

What about W Virginians and others hurt by coal?

Anonymous: I have to ask: what about the severe environmental destruction caused by coal mining people in W Virginia have to endure? What about your neighbors and countrymen displaced and hurt by the coal mining practices there? Is it justified that they have to suffer just so you can have a job? Is it justified that the coal you dig is burned elsewhere and pollutes the atmosphere and causes global warming? This will impact hundreds of millions of people in your lifetime. Do you care about that? Or is it all just ok so you can have a job. I know you probably don't believe what I'm saying. You have indicated as much above. Know this: your brainwashed state will only hurt you and your family. You should thank God there are people out there watching over you and your family's future because as much as you think you are doing the right thing, you aren't. I have nothing against you personally but in this battle of fact versus fiction the best way through means putting MTR coal and all coal mining out of business. End of story. You should think about how to adapt. You live in America, the land of opportunity. Not like Pakistan where flooding has displaced 1M people in one of the great humanitarian disasters in history. One million homes destroyed. 1.4M acres of crops destroyed. Disease and famine to follow for many months. And it was brought on thanks to the coal you mine. It isn't your fault, but please, could you stop cheer leading for the people who ARE responsible?

Tell facebook you mean it!

Hi, Myself, I'm an activist and got arrested in an action against the planning of a new coal plant in Antwerp, Belgium, last year. I also use facebook. You've probably heard that FB new Data Center will use energy that's for 70% gained from coal. Maybe also funded trhough Chase, who knows? So, I'll leave FB if they won't change their plans. If you're an activist and on FB to, you also can let them know that you mean it, because coal is a dirty business. Group page: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=346401620732 And join the various other protest groups as well. Cheers.

I do not think the issue

I do not think the issue just settles down with Seattle because places all over the world are having trouble with the potential disturbance caused by hefty banks. After all who else could destroy the economy of the world? And I must say that I am not at all surprised to know that Chase has been the number one among the global criminals. I have to say no one even got insurance from therefor a year and that explained the whole revelation then on!

Green Energy is the answer

I hate when I see any tree cut down, let alone entire mountains. It's absurd that we continue to destroy the world around us so we can continue to live a stagnant lifestyle. It's time that the entire world starts to invest more resources into green energy because that is how we will be able to live life comfortably without damaging our environment. appreciation

Chase "Chase" out of town and the country if they don’t stop supporting huge criminal enterprises like Massey Energy. Let’s make a concerted effort to have people pull their mony from all banks that support the destruction of Appalachia. People, open your eyes and watch this http://www.tubesfan.com/watch/state-of-the-re-union-appalachia-mountain-top-removal-mining Open your minds and think what effects it may cause( Appalachia is being raped of its resources, its mountains, its natural beauty and wildlife. I believe humans are innovative enough to find a new and more efficient way to create power-not necessarily nuclear.

How about moderation

I think that it is somewhat egotistical and presumptuous to single out a company, in this case J.P. Morgan, for "raping" an area of it's resources. We all know, even those who support the continued use of coal, that there are other forms of energy that can be used. Most people of this site probably support the use of solar and wind energy. Guess what. Those solar panels have to be put somewhere that the sun can reach (ie: not under trees), and those wind turbines have to be in a place that wind can reach speeds to turn them (ie: a flat, mostly barren landscape). Unfortunately Seattle and more importantly the mountain area do not have flat barren landscapes like plumbing NYC. So whether you support coal, wind, solar, water or any other type of energy, there has to be room to "house" the equipment necessary to capture and convert said energy.
