Is Your Congressperson in bed with King Coal?

New online tool allows users to track the flow of coal money in US politics.

Want to find out how much coal money your legislators are taking from an industry that has buried more than 1000 miles of streams, and destroyed more than 470 mountaintops in Central Appalachia alone?

FollowTheCoalMoney.org, a joint project of Oil Change International and Appalachian Voices, tracks the dirty coal money funding our Congress.

The coal industry is lobbying our political leaders in ever increasing numbers, but unfortunately that’s just half the equation. In addition, they are directly lining the pockets of our politicians through campaign contributions.

In the 2006 elections, coal companies donated over 8 million dollars to Congressional and Senate campaigns and those donations are pouring in for this election cycle.

“Follow the Coal Money is an interactive tool that tracks the flow and influence of coal money in US politics, throughout all political parties. As Congress debates how to address two of coal's biggest problems -- mountaintop removal and global warming -- you can find out how polluters are influencing lawmakers with their dirty coal money.”

The data is provided by Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to making campaign contribution information available and easily understandable through OpenSecrets.org.

OpenSecrets.org has become a clearinghouse for data and analysis on multiple aspects of money in politics—the independent interest groups called 527s committees, federal lobbying, Washington’s “revolving door”, privately sponsored congressional travel and the personal finances of members of Congress, the president and other officials.”

The press has been all over McCain and Obama for taking contributions from these types, but they are not alone. Check out this tool to see where your politician ranks.
