For a number of years, a coalition of groups have been fighting Dominion Energy’s proposed coal-fired power plant in southwest VA. Using tactics ranging from lobbying to letter writing to lawsuits to protests to lockdowns outside Dominion’s Richmond HQ and the actual plant site itself in Wise, VA.

Yesterday, Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers spoke at the 6th annual Sustainable Energy Conference in Raleigh to promote Duke’s clean energy agenda which includes building a dirty coal plant in Cliffside, North Carolina.

That doesn’t sound like “clean energy” to me.

A lot of other people in North Carolina agree.

At the American Geophysical Union union meeting in San Francisco, Kenneth Caldeira of Stanford University presented new calculations that even if humanity zeroed out its use of oil, emissions from coal burning would rapidly push global warming to dangerous levels.

"At some point we must draw a line across the ground of our home and our being, drive a spear into the land and say to the bulldozers, earthmovers, government and corporations, "thus far and no further." If we do not, we shall later feel, instead of pride, the regret of Thoroeau, that good but overly-bookish man, who wrote, near the end of his life, "If I repent of anything it is likely to be my good behaviour."-Ed Abbey

Coal CEO calls environmentalists crazy

States that Big Coal "needs to start standing up for itself"

This is too much. Don Blankenship and Massey Energy are the poster
children for mountaintop removal. They not only wreck the planet by
selling the coal they mine to be burned, but wreck Appalachian
communities and landscape in extracting it. It’s a pretty horrible
process and this guy labels us as the crazy ones?
My favorite line in this article is “The greeniacs are taking over the world.”
